Health Screenings, Cooking Demos, Safety Exhibits and More Offered at 2018 State Employee Wellness & Safety Expo

Raleigh – The 2018 Wellness & Safety Expo provides state government employees and retirees with free health screenings, cooking demonstrations from celebrity chefs, and opportunities to learn life-saving skills. The event takes place Wednesday at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds.

“The Wellness & Safety Expo is a valuable resource for state employees and retirees to learn about available wellness programs and take steps to lead healthier, more active lives,” said Barbara Gibson, director of the Office of State Human Resources. “More than 150 vendors will provide education and resources, including health screening through the State Health Plan and other medical professionals.”

The Wellness & Safety Expo will begin with an opening program at 9 a.m. featuring remarks from Gibson and Kristi Jones, chief of staff to Governor Roy Cooper. Three employees from different state agencies will share their life-changing experiences as participants in state wellness programs.

Among the presenters will be Chef Doreen Colondres of The Kitchen Doesn’t Bite, who will share healthy cooking tips, and Safe Kids North Carolina, which will demonstrate showing how quickly a car can get hot, posing dangerous risk for children and pets. More than 150 vendors will provide information on fitness, nutrition, and financial wellness. State employees can get HIV testing, fire extinguisher training and watch CPR demonstrations on site.

Attendees are encouraged to give back to the community by bringing two non-perishable food or hygiene items for the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina and donating blood to the American Red Cross.
