Disability Plan

Overview

Starting on January 1, 2020, NCFlex will be offering disability insurance for the first time through Standard Insurance Company (The Standard).  This is a combined plan and includes Short Term Disability (STD) and Long Term Disability (LTD) insurance.  Eligible employees can enroll in this plan during Annual Enrollment November 2 - November 19.  

These plans provide income replacement if you become unable to work due to a medical disability.

  • STD benefits begin on the 15th calendar day of your disability and go until day 60.  The plan pays $150 per day, up to a maximum of $750 per week. 
  • LTD benefits begin to pay after you have been continuously disabled for 60 days.  Your monthly benefit will be reduced by deductible income, such as Social Security or workers' compensation benefits.  The plan will replace 66 2/3% of your eligible earnings, up to a maximum benefit of $12,500 per month.  If offsets apply, there is still a minimum payout per month of $100 or 10% of the LTD benefit.  

Eligibility 

You may enroll in the NCFlex Disability plan if you are a full-time active employee* of a state agency, select community college, or select charter school, working at least 30 hours or more hours per week.  If you have questions about your eligibility, contact your Health Benefits Respresentative (HBR). 

*Employees of The University of North Carolina System are not eligible for this benefit.
