In Dr. Christie Poteet’s role as assistant vice chancellor for student affairs, she focuses on supporting student success at the University of North Carolina Pembroke (UNCP). Her work aims to promote student well-being by ensuring access to resources, promoting holistic student development, and fostering a positive campus environment. Dr. Poteet manages and provides oversight to a variety of programs that directly impact students’ lives, such as housing, health services, counseling, and student activities. Through her work, Dr. Poteet makes an undeniable impact on UNCP students, but she takes serving others to the next level by leveraging her position to change the lives of residents of Robeson County.
For more than a decade, Dr. Poteet has led initiatives that bring together UNCP’s campus and the surrounding community to strengthen the region’s long-term support systems. Seven years ago, she partnered with local organizations to open a six-bed emergency shelter that served students in crisis. She also helped turn UNCP’s food pantry into a community resource visited more than 5,000 times annually. Each fall, Dr. Poteet also organizes the Pembroke Community Thanksgiving Dinner, offering those who would otherwise be alone on the holiday a hot meal and a sense of belonging.
Dr. Poteet has played a key role in launching large-scale, rapid response initiatives such as the No Braves Left Behind campaign, which mobilized over 100 volunteers to secure emergency aid for more than 200 students facing financial hardship. While student-focused in scope, the campaign’s impact rippled outward by engaging donors, service providers, and volunteers.
Beyond these efforts, Dr. Poteet’s volunteerism extends to her personal life. She serves on the North Carolina State Employees’ Credit Union Advisory Board and has previously advocated for children as a Guardian ad Litem, supported the Rape Crisis Center of Robeson County, and provided strategic leadership for other local nonprofits.
Through every endeavor, Dr. Christie Poteet demonstrates that public service is not just a part of her work, but a part of her life. The State of North Carolina commends Dr. Poteet for her extraordinary service.
