The mediation program serves as Step 1 of our statewide employee grievance procedure. Mediators play an invaluable role in assisting with the resolution of employee complaints at the lowest possible level and ensuring that grievances are managed fairly and thoroughly. The mediation model for resolving disputes uses a neutral third party to facilitate negotiation between the parties and assist them in working together to generate solutions for settling their conflict. Unlike a judge or arbitrator, mediators do not render judgments – any resolution reached comes from the parties themselves.

To begin volunteering for the program, you are required to complete our 40-hour mediation training program. This training will be delivered in partnership with The North Carolina Center for Mediation, a non-profit, private organization dedicated to the process of cooperative resolution of conflicts with the intervention of alternative dispute resolution methods.
