Designating North Carolina as an Employment First state for individuals with disabilities in 2019 has had a positive impact on how employees are perceived and supported in state government workplaces, according to several state agency and university employees. Governor Roy Cooper today announced an extension of the policy that allows state employees to use volunteer days to help combat staff shortages in K-12 school districts across the state due to COVID-19. The extension, through April 15, provides an additional 24 hours of Community Service Leave for state employees with supervisor approval to work in North Carolina schools as substitute teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria staff and other needed roles – in addition to the standard 24 hours of volunteer leave provided annually. Thirty-nine state employees from 10 state agencies and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill are recipients of the 2021 Governor’s Awards for Excellence, the highest honor a state employee may receive for dedicated service to the state and the people of North Carolina. The commendations were announced during a virtual online ceremony that may be viewed anytime.

Thirty-nine state employees from 10 state agencies and the UNC Systems Office will be honored with Governor’s Awards for Excellence at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, during a virtual online ceremony. Viewers may register to watch the program through the Office of State Human Resources’ YouTube channel and receive a reminder alert before it begins.

Public sector employees from state agencies and local government will be recognized today for completing the rigorous North Carolina Certified Public Manager® Program (CPM) during an informal virtual ceremony led by the Talent Management Division of the Office of State Human Resources (OSHR).

Governor Roy Cooper has proclaimed October as Disability Employment Awareness Month, stressing the importance of ensuring that people with disabilities have full access to employment and community involvement during the national recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
