WalkSmartNC Pedestrian Safety Event

On Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the N.C. Office of State Human Resources’ (OSHR) Environment, Health, and Safety (EH&S) Director Eddie Johnson and EH&S Consultant Steve Nixon partnered with Asheville Police Department’s (APD) Outreach Division to bring the WalkSmartNC campaign to Biltmore Village.

APD selected a notably hazardous, intersection with a high-volume of pedestrian activity for the team set up the event.

“It is a really important initiative, pedestrian safety is paramount in our city,”, said Officer Isaiah Senyak. “We look forward to continuing to enforce pedestrian crosswalk laws. Please be careful when you cross the street and crosswalks, look both ways, and motorists remember that you have to yield to pedestrians”.

APD initiated interactions with over 25 motorists and 20 pedestrians, educating them on the importance of pedestrian safety.

“We appreciate the collaboration with APD”, said EH&S Director Eddie Johnson. “We have had a lot of good interaction with the public and I’m looking forward to doing another event in the spring.”
