The State Employee Memorial Program honors State employees who lose their lives while in the line of service for North Carolina. The first annual Memorial Ceremony to remember their service was held at the North Carolina Capitol on May 31, 2000.

When an employee loses his or her life in the line of duty, the program provides an immediate acknowledgment of the value and service of that individual with a personal letter to the family from the Governor of North Carolina. A North Carolina flag, a certificate verifying when the flag was flown over the Capitol and a letter from the Human Resources Director accompany the Governor's letter.

A resource has also been created for supervisors and State employees tasked with notifying the deceased's next of kin.
