Network Engineer

Class Concept

This is complex engineering work in providing technical direction and assistance in meeting a variety of voice, security, data, and video communications needs of an organization. Employees receive agency or department requests for assistance, evaluate needs, design and prepare technical specifications, and project cost estimates for equipment and systems to meet their needs. Employees may direct the work of other telecommunications engineers to supply engineering support to agencies statewide. Work involves researching new equipment and new methods of telecommunications, working directly with vendors to provide new and upgraded network and voice services. Employee handles the most complex engineering problems and projects and may perform other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of network engineering.
  • Expert knowledge of electronics telecommunication devices and systems.
  • Ability to determine communications needs and specify equipment and systems to meet these needs.
  • Ability to plan work operations.
  • Ability to work independently and with other technical personnel in negotiations.
  • Ability to train and direct other employees.
  • Ability to manage projects through implementation.
  • Thorough knowledge of telecommunications network software and hardware and the full range of network system requirements.
  • Ability to evaluate vendor equipment, design and fabricate network component parts, and diagnose and resolve network operations problems.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in computer science or an IT related field or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of progressive experience in network engineering; or Associate degree in computer science or an IT related field or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of progressive experience in network engineering; or High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and seven years of experience in networking or related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
