Class Concept

Employees in this class perform sub-professional and technical assignments in the evaluation of environmental, natural resource management or energy program, issue or systems. Evaluations are conducted to test for efficiency or adherence to permit requirements and State and EPA rules and regulations. Employees evaluate and inspect environmental control facilities to ensure they are in compliance; investigate complaints on suspected polluters; and provide technical assistance on operation and maintenance problems; and respond to emergency situations. Inspections and investigations involve more complex and/or varied situations. s. Work requires report writing, including the accurate recording of data collected, and k may include exposure to hazardous and/or radioactive materials.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of the environmental area to which assigned.
  • Considerable knowledge of the state and federal rules and regulations to the environmental area to which assigned.
  • Working knowledge of the applications of sampling, preservation and testing procedures utilized in the types of facilities to be inspected.
  • Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of the types of facilities to be inspected.
  • Ability to conduct field investigations and to write technical reports.
  • Ability to handle with tact and consistency the diversity of public contacts required by the position.
  • Ability to plan and schedule work; ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral form.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in environmental or natural resources management work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
