Class Concept

This is supervisory and administrative work as Deputy Commander in the Highway Patrol. Position assists the Highway Patrol Colonel in the preparation of proposed legislation and serves as legislative liaison when necessary, directing the work of the division, and coordinating the work assignments of all sections within the Highway Patrol. Work involves coordinating patrol activities and operations with other state and federal agencies. Work is performed independently under the direction of the Highway Patrol Colonel. In the absence of the Highway Patrol Colonel, this position assumes command of the Highway Patrol and functions with the same authority as the Highway Patrol Colonel.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of North Carolina and other states motor vehicle registration and title laws.
  • Thorough knowledge of the provisions of the North Carolina Motor Vehicle Act.
  • Thorough knowledge of established policies, procedures, rules, and regulations pertaining to the Department of Motor Vehicles and Highway Patrol.
  • Thorough knowledge of the organizational structure and the operational policies and procedures of the Highway Patrol.
  • Ability to present information effectively in oral and written form.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, governmental officials and Patrol personnel.
  • Ability to plan, organize and supervise a work area, to solve problems.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma, supplemented by extensive training in police methods and procedures and considerable supervisory and administrative experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.

Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training and Standards Commission.
