Highway Patrol Trooper (Master)

Class Concept

This is advanced work in the enforcement of traffic laws and reducing crime on public streets and highways in North Carolina. Employees patrol roads of high enforcement activity within an assigned district and assist in field training for new Troopers. Work involves assisting the public in emergencies; investigating highway accidents; apprehending violators of the law and/or issuing warnings; testifying in court; and assisting other law enforcement agencies to ensure public safety. Work may include special enforcement assignments within assigned district and temporary assignments in a declared state of emergency. Serves as a Field Training Officer to new Troopers. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Sergeant, guided by established Highway Patrol policies and procedures, and is reviewed through daily activity reports and conferences with supervisors.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Working knowledge of the North Carolina Motor Vehicle laws.
• Skill in the operation of a patrol vehicle at high speeds and/or in inclement weather.
• Skill in the use of firearms.
• Ability to collect and present information on patrol activities and investigations in oral and written form.
• Ability to deal with authority while maintaining professional and courteous demeanor with the general public.
• Ability to react calmly and quickly under emergency conditions.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and 3 years' experience as a Trooper (Senior); or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.

Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training and Standards Commission.
