Class Concept

Positions in this class direct the statewide law enforcement operation for the Division of Marine Fisheries ensuring compliance with conservation regulations and protection of the state's fisheries resources. As Law Enforcement Director, responsibilities include oversight of all activities towards the successful attainment of the mission of the Division of Marine Fisheries. Responsibilities include oversight of the planning and organizing operations, resource allocation and manages the budget for the section. The Director also serves as a liaison with state and federal agencies. Positions in this class provide the direction for all activities of the Marine Patrol Section including responsibilities for adequate performance of all staff, and performs all other related work. Positions in this classification generally carry the rank of Colonel.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Through knowledge of Marine Fisheries enforcement policies and guidelines, state and federal laws that pertain to Marine Fisheries enforcement, North Carolina General Statutes and Fisheries Rules for Coastal Waters, and Marine Fisheries proclamations.
  • Through knowledge of Division of Criminal Information rules, policies, and procedures; National Marine Fisheries regulations; and Marine Fisheries rules and regulations.
  • Through knowledge of navigational charts and county/state maps.
  • Skilled in operation of a patrol vessel.
  • Ability to direct and carryout the enforcement activity for the division of Marine Fisheries.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in a related field from an appropriately accredited institution, and seven years of progressive law enforcement experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Basic Law Enforcement Certification under North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission. Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.
