Class Concept

Positions in this class serve as field officer to ensure compliance with conservation regulations and protect the state's fisheries resources. It is the responsibility of the Marine Patrol Officer to ensure fishermen comply with general statutes and rules that are developed to protect and regulate the harvest of the state's fisheries. In addition to checking commercial and recreational fishermen, officers patrol waterways, piers, and beaches in coastal areas. Position also inspects seafood houses, vehicles transporting seafood, and restaurants all over the state to ensure compliance with fisheries rules. Duties also include apprehending violators committing offenses, investigating violations or complaints, collecting and preserving evidence and following the chain of custody, testifying in court proceedings and performing related work. At this level the officer may be required to serve as a Field Training Officer (FTO).

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge gained through experience of Marine Fishery enforcement policies and guidelines, state and federal laws that pertain to Marine Fisheries enforcement, North Carolina General Statutes and Fisheries Rules for Coastal Waters, and Marine Fisheries proclamations.
  • Considerable knowledge gained through experience of Division of Criminal Information rules, policies, and procedures; National Marine Fisheries regulations; and Marine Fisheries rules and regulations.
  • Considerable knowledge gained through experience of navigational charts and county/state maps.
  • Skilled in the operation of a patrol vessel.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School of General Educational Development (GED) diploma, three years of experience as a Marine Fisheries Law Enforcement Officer and successful completion of a knowledge examination administered by Marine Patrol management to determine adequate level of knowledge of Marine Fisheries rules, regulations and policy.

Necessary Special Requirements

Basic Law Enforcement Certification under North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission. Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.
