Class Concept

This is professional law enforcement and investigative work involving violations of the criminal laws of North Carolina. Employees perform the full range of criminal investigative duties or specialized assignments within designated geographical areas and are responsible for providing technical assistance to local law enforcement agencies. Based on individual training and experience, responsibilities span from routine assignments to the coordination of highly complex, multi‑agency cases. Work ranges from conducting straightforward investigations, where employees ensure proper investigative and arrest procedures are followed, to handling cases requiring extensive analysis, evidence evaluation, and coordination across jurisdictions. Employees independently manage routine and moderately complex investigations, assist senior agents or task force leaders on larger cases, and, at advanced levels, provide expert technical guidance, coordinate major investigations, or serve as specialists in areas such as arson, crime scene investigations, financial crimes, internet crimes against children, or polygraph examinations. They may also participate in statewide, federal, or international investigative teams. Across all levels, employees complete required records and reports and may report to a SBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge or SBI Special Agent in Charge.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Basic knowledge of the methods, procedures, and practices used in the investigation of criminal offenses to solve the more common types of crimes.
• Basic knowledge of the principles of securing and identifying the more common types of physical evidence.
• Ability to investigate a variety of criminal cases, to interpret and apply criminal laws of North Carolina in investigations, to make arrest, to prepare comprehensive and detailed reports pertaining to individual cases, to present effective court testimony, and to apply the principles, techniques, and procedures of modern criminal investigations.
• Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with local law enforcement agencies, federal investigators, suspects, and witnesses.
• Ability to use firearms and tools and equipment involved in evidence collection and enforcement agencies and officers.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of law enforcement experience including the power to arrest; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Applicant must graduate from the next available SBI Academy upon hire and meet any other applicable NC state statutory standards for law enforcement officers.
