Work in this class involves the clinical supervision and administration of one shift of a Respiratory Therapy Department in a large teaching hospital. Employee is responsible for independently scheduling, coordinating, and participating in administering respiratory therapy to patients with respiratory diseases or complications upon the request of a physician. Duties include resuscitation of patients who have suffered cardiac or respiratory arrests, training subordinate technicians and lower level therapists and supervising all aspects of clinical therapy. Work is performed under the general supervision of the director of the department of respiratory therapy and is reviewed through oral conferences and written reports for program success.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of respiratory therapy principles, techniques, methods, and their proper application.
Thorough knowledge of the mechanical apparatus and its application used in respiratory therapy.
Thorough knowledge of cardiopulmonary anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pathogenic microbiology.
Thorough knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.
Thorough knowledge of the various medications used in the treatment of respiratory distress.
Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, and supervise respiratory therapy for a shift in a large teaching hospital. Ability to train and supervise subordinate respiratory therapists and technicians.
Ability to teach respiratory therapy procedures to patients and families.
Ability to gain confidence and secure the cooperation of patients.
Minimum Education and Experience
Licensed as a Respiratory Therapist in the state of North Carolina and 2 years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist.
