Class Concept

This is skilled and specialized work involving the construction and installation of exhibits in a science, history, or art museum and/or performing a variety of technical assignments in support of museum curatorial staff. Employees may assist curators in performing collection maintenance and routine field specimen collection, specimen cataloging, and processing of educational materials. Employees may be responsible for handling and installing specimens, artifacts, and irreplaceable works of art; constructing and maintaining secure storage areas for specimens, artifacts, and works of art; planning and installing exhibitions and exhibit lighting systems. Work may involve installing and maintaining mechanical, electrical, and electronic devices in exhibits; overseeing carpenters and painters who assist in construction and installation activities. Work may include the training and supervision of part-time workers. Daily functions are performed independently under the general supervision of professional museum staff.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • General knowledge of scientific terminology and classification and scientific writing techniques.
  • Working knowledge of the proper handling of works of art, artifacts, specimens.
  • Working knowledge of techniques and materials used in matting, framing, and displaying specimens, artifacts, and works of art.
  • Working knowledge of techniques involved in checking and packing specimens, artifacts, and works of art for shipment and/or storage.
  • Working knowledge of the tools and work techniques of the cabinetmaking and carpentry trades sufficient to construct walls, containers, stands, bases, bins, etc.
  • Working knowledge of building codes, electrical codes, OSHA regulations and related safety requirements and protective equipment.
  • Ability to work with metals, woods, Plexiglas and other plastic materials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience in museum related work in area of assignment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
