Class Concept

Work in this class involves the operation of steam boilers for heating purposes. Employees serve as shift boiler operators in steam plants that vary in size and complexity. Duties include starting and shutting down boilers, monitoring various operational readings and making necessary adjustments to maintain optional efficiency, performing water tests and adding chemicals to water as necessary, performing routine boiler maintenance and assisting in more complex maintenance jobs. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Steam Plant Supervisor in a smaller plant and under the supervision of a Boiler Shift Supervisor in a larger plant.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of the principles and techniques involved in mechanical maintenance.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in mechanical maintenance.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to accurately record indicator readings.
  • Ability to perform work independently.
  • Physical strength sufficient to perform heavy physical tasks on a periodic basis.
  • Ability to perform elementary arithmetic calculations.

Minimum Education and Experience

One year of progressive experience in the performance of tasks associated with mechanical maintenance or boiler operation; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
