Class Concept

Work involves assisting with loading and unloading procedures and performing other assigned tasks aboard North Carolina State Ferries. Positions may assist in loading and parking of motor vehicles in order to distribute weight evenly, maintain deck and mechanical equipment and passenger facilities, and observing passengers for suspicious actions or behavior. Positions are responsible for following all safety and Homeland Security rules and regulations. Work is performed under the general supervision of a ferry captain and is evaluated by the manner in which assigned tasks are carried out. Positions may assist the engineer with performing routine maintenance repair work. Positions also operate deck ramps, and assist the crew in securing the vessel in case of fire, breakdowns or inclement weather. Employees also assist maintenance crews in repairing the vessel when in dry dock.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of the procedures and practices exercised in loading and unloading a ferry vessel.
  • Basic knowledge of the operation and maintenance of hoists, motors and safety devices required in the operation of a ferry.
  • Basic knowledge of U.S. Coast Guard rules and regulations governing the operation of a ferry vessel in intra-coastal waters.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with the general public.

Minimum Education and Experience

Possession of a valid Ordinary Seaman Certificate issued by the US Coast Guard.

Necessary Special Requirements

Possession of a Transportation Worker Identification Credential Card (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
