Class Concept

This is supervisory work in directing a crew of laborers engaged in performing a variety of unskilled or semi- skilled manual tasks. Work can include performing some of the same manual tasks performed by those supervised.

Positions plan and supervise the activities of subordinate personnel. Such activities require knowledge of work techniques and the use of judgment and initiative in carrying out the work to completion. Routine work assignments are independently performed but special or unusual work assignments are outlined by a supervisor who inspects work during progress and upon completion for adherence to instructions. Work includes directing laborers in loading, unloading, moving, or storing materials and equipment. Work could involve supervising the erection, repair, and removal of portable benches and bleachers. Supervises laborers engaged in constructing walls, sidewalks, parking lots, storm sewers, and catch basins. Work can include making reports and keeping records of work accomplished and materials used.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Intermediate knowledge of the methods and practices used in loading, unloading, and storing materials or heavy objects.
  • Intermediate knowledge of the methods and practices used in building and maintenance construction and ground upkeep.
  • Intermediate knowledge of the equipment used to move or lift heavy objects.
  • Ability to plan and direct a group of employees performing routine manual tasks.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral or written work assignments.
  • Ability to maintain routine clerical records.
  • Ability to perform work involving physical strain for extended periods of time.

Minimum Education and Experience

Education and/or experience in manual work that is directly related to the job and consistent with accepted practices of the trade equivalent to two (2) years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
