Class Concept

This class is responsible for the planning and supervision of installation, maintenance, and repair of air, gas, water, and waste disposal systems. Work assignments result from discussions or written instructions from a superior and are in the terms of objectives to be accomplished. Technical advice and recommendations are received for large and complex installation, but employee independently plans procedures and develops methods to accomplish desired results. Work is evaluated on the basis of satisfactory operation of equipment maintained, repaired, or installed.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods of installation and repair of plumbing systems.
  • Considerable knowledge of the safety precautions of the plumbing trade.
  • Skill in the use of tools, materials, and equipment commonly used in the performance of plumbing work.
  • Ability to make estimates of time and materials.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of plumbers, apprentices, and laborers.
  • Ability to instruct subordinate personnel in plumbing work to establish a program of training for apprentices.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of journey level plumbing experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission
