Class Concept

Work in this class primarily involves the operation of standard hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and heavy equipment utilized in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of roads and roadside features for the State's highway and roadway systems. Other duties include inspecting, ensuring work zone safety, and participating in snow & ice removal. Positions in this class and level will specialize in a particular area of transportation work with duties that may include flagging and assisting with maintenance/repair project completion through the use of standard tools and equipment such as tractor with various attachments, curb machine, cutoff saw, dump truck, small wheel and sheep foot rollers, vibrator roller compactor, pulverizer mixer, and pneumatic tire roller; assisting paint crews, erecting road signs, and/or assisting Electronics Technicians with maintenance and installation of signals; operating hand tools for sign installation and replacement as well as dump truck, broom tractor, paint line removing machine, thermoplastic machine, trencher, and edge-line paint gun operation; vegetation control, debris removal, pushing snow, tractor with various attachments and mower operation, dump and flatbed truck operation, assisting in grass and wildflower installation and maintenance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of and skill in the safe operation of required equipment.
  • Ability to learn the operation of higher-level equipment.
  • Ability to follow precise verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to anticipate and avoid safety hazards for self, co-workers and traveling public.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school education General Educational Development Diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
