Class Concept

Work in this class primarily involves the operation of moderately complex hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and heavy equipment utilized in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of roads and roadside features for the State's highway and roadway systems. Other duties include inspecting, ensuring work zone safety, participating in snow & ice removal and training lower-level workers. Positions in this class and level will specialize in a particular transportation area with duties that may include the oversight of minor repair projects of minimal complexity and assisting with the completion of moderately to highly complex repair and maintenance projects through the use of tools and equipment to include all lower level equipment as well as asphalt tankers and distributors (truck mounted), backhoe, chipspreader, crawler tractor, motor-grader, scraper, track loader, and widening machine; operating tractors, mowers, backhoes and computer controlled pesticide applicators (up to 300 gallons) as well as assisting in chemical/pesticide application, pesticide/chemical training, vegetation control, and overseeing grass wildflower installation and maintenance; assembling and placing concrete forms, general welding and carpentry work of minimal to moderate complexity, confined space entry, and training for safety, trenching and shoring, all of which may involve the utilization of tools and equipment to include welders, hand tools, tractor trailers (low boy), backhoe, dump trucks and vibrator roller compactors.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of and skill in the safe operation of required equipment.
  • Ability to learn the operation of higher-level equipment.
  • Ability to follow precise directions.
  • Ability to anticipate and avoid safety hazards for self, co-workers and traveling public.
  • Ability to lead crews as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire
