Class Concept

Work in this class involves the supervision of a group of two to four Vehicle & Equipment Repair Technicians and other personnel that perform small engine, automotive and heavy equipment repair and/or retrofitting. Supervision ranges from small repair shops to managerial responsibility for the replacement, repair and service of a Divisional large vehicle/equipment fleet. Positions in this class are normally responsible for determining the type and extent of repair work to be completed and scheduling vehicles/equipment for service/repair. Work also includes establishing general time limits for maintenance or repair work; making repair assignments; and determining the extent of any additional repair work to be done. Positions may instruct other supervisors and technicians in difficult repair assignments; inspect work upon completion to determine that necessary repairs have been made and that vehicles and/or equipment are in proper operating condition; prepare work reports on maintenance/repair work done; submit requisitions for needed materials; purchase emergency supplies as needed in order to make necessary repairs; and maintain or supervise the maintenance of stock records. Positions analyze operating cost records and prepare reports.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines.
• Considerable knowledge of the methods of adjusting and repairing the generating, ignition, and electrical wiring systems found in automotive equipment.
• Skill in the use of the tools and equipment found in automotive & heavy equipment repair garages.
• Ability to diagnose complex operating defects in automotive and heavy equipment and determine the type and extent of repairs needed.
• Ability to assign and direct the work of lower level Vehicle & Equipment Repair Technicians.
• Ability to maintain routine clerical records on the equipment repaired.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the repair of vehicles and/or equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
