Class Concept
This is professional and technical work in directing a marine safety program. Positions plan, develop and conduct the safe operation of a dive program utilizing open circuit Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA), Surface Supplied Operations and/or closed circuit re-breathers at a public aquarium in various environments. Positions routinely recruit, evaluate, train, schedule, document, and work closely with staff divers including volunteers to effectively carry out dive operations within in-house displays as well as in open water. Positions establish and maintain a dive safety manual that delineates dive protocols and procedures, training schedules and standards, which are in full compliance with applicable OSHA, Recreational SCUBA Training Council (PADI, SDI, SSI, YMCA, etc.), NAUI and other dive industry standards. Work includes developing specifications, overseeing procurement, along with repair and maintenance of dive gear inventory. Work includes working with education department to develop lectures and workshops. Work may involve maintaining equipment records, air compressor operations, dive log certification, and dive plans. It may also involve scheduling staff to assist aquariums when SCUBA skills are required for maintenance of aquarium facilities and feeding of the live animal display collections. Positions may supervise other dive safety staff. Positions typically report to the Assistant Aquarium Director or higher-level administrative manager.
