Elevator Inspection Director

Class Concept

This is administrative work in directing the Elevator Inspection Division in the Department of Labor. Position plans, coordinates, and evaluates a program designed to ensure compliance to the State and national safety codes governing elevators, aerial passenger tramways, and amusement devices. The Director serves as the final program level authority in hearing appeals of regulatory actions, determining violations cases to be prosecuted in the courts, and in the interpretation of codes and approval of new installations or equipment. Position consults with architects and contractors on problems in the design or installation of equipment. Duties include the development of new provisions or revisions of the State safety codes and consulting with industry representatives, and other State and Federal officials on the national safety codes. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Deputy Commissioner and evaluated through periodic conferences and reports for the effectiveness of the safety program for elevators and related public conveyance equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the State and national safety codes governing the design, construction and operation of elevators, aerial passenger tramways and amusement devices.
  • Considerable knowledge of the construction and operation of elevators and related equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of electrical wiring, electric motors, and hydraulic systems.
  • Working knowledge of algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to interpret and understand applicable safety codes and regulations and apply these in approval or disapproval of designs for new or modified installations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with owners, company representatives, other State and national officials and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in, written and oral form.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering or closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of experience in the elevator industry, including work in the construction, and maintenance of installations or in elevator inspection work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

At the time of hire, employees in this class must possess the Quality Elevator Inspector Certification. The certification requires employees to pass a comprehensive exam.
