Class Concept

Elevator Inspector enforces provision of state and national safety codes for elevators, escalators, personnel hoists, amusement devices, tramway devices and related passenger carrying devices. The position has the condemnation authority of unsafe passenger-carrying equipment and conducts investigations of accidents where unsafe equipment or operations were involved.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Elevator and Amusement Device Inspector Supervisor and reviewed through weekly reports, observation of inspections, and in periodic conferences. Positions inspect a variety of equipment to determine its safe working condition and operation and to detect hazards or mechanical failures which would endanger passengers and repairmen. Positions consult with management and offer technical assistance concerning safety equipment and devices and methods of operation.

Schedules and conducts final field inspections and issues a certificate prior to equipment being used for conveyance of passengers and periodic re-inspections to determine that equipment is being safely maintained and conforms to standards of the safety codes; types of equipment inspected include: passenger and freight elevators, wind turbine elevators, escalators, aerial passenger tramways, amusement devices, special related equipment, and workmen's hoists. Inspects elevator hoist-ways, passenger cars, machinery, moving parts and cables, safety devices and equipment, auxiliary power sources, electrical wiring, and hydraulic systems, where applicable, to determine compliance to design requirements and safety codes. Witnesses loading tests of passenger cars based on weight capacity to determine that the equipment is within the designed parameters. Points out unsafe equipment and recommends needed repairs or alterations to owners, operators, or company representatives. Observes operators of lifts and amusement devices for safe operating procedures; requires owner or his representative to replace incompetent or negligent employees. Examines blueprints and drawings of installations and equipment to determine compliance to approved construction standards and maintenance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Intermediate knowledge of the construction and operation of elevators, escalators, and similar equipment
  • Basic knowledge of applicable State and national safety codes for elevators, amusement devices and special equipment
  • Basic knowledge of electric motors and electrical wiring and hydraulics
  • Inspectors must possess basic computer skills
  • Ability to understand and use discretion in applying technical regulations and provisions of the safety codes concerning the use and condition of elevators and related installations
  • Ability to understand and apply formulae, involving algebra and geometry and data in tabular and graphic form, to given conditions and to derive a correct solution
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with owners, operators, company representatives, and the public
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of experience in the construction, inspection, erection, or servicing of elevators and related equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Must obtain QEI (Quality Elevator Inspector) certification within one year of employment.
