This is skilled and technical work in assisting Architects and Engineers in the full range of tasks associated with planning for the design and construction of new buildings and building additions or renovations. Positions in this class inspect new construction or existing facilities to determine construction or renovation needs, determine the extent of work, prepare preliminary and final working drawings, specifications, and cost estimates, and inspect work in progress for quality of work and adherence to plans and specifications. Inspects facilities for adequacy of heating, air conditioning, or electrical systems, roofing problems, structural problems, etc. Positions make computations and recommendations on type and extent of needed repairs and construction needs. Completes working drawings for new buildings, renovations, or additions to existing buildings which can include specifications and cost estimates. Work is performed under the general supervision of a consulting Architect or Engineer and is reviewed through spot-checking of the more complex work for completeness.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of applicable sections of the North Carolina State Building Code.
Considerable knowledge of available building materials.
Working knowledge of the structural design of buildings.
Working knowledge of the operational theory behind building mechanical and electrical systems.
Working knowledge of algebra, trigonometry, and geometry.
Working knowledge of construction methods and techniques.
Ability to visualize building additions and renovations and lay out floor plans, including lighting, electrical outlets, windows, and doors.
Ability to compute cost estimates for extensive renovations or additions.
Minimum Education and Experience
Associate's degree in architectural technology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in design, cost estimating, and inspection of construction projects with emphasis on building construction; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
