Class Concept

This is professional medical work supervising Physicians and other staff in providing diagnosis and treatment services in a state medical facility. Employees provide leadership in ensuring supervised staff are providing appropriate care and in coordinating care with other managers and providers both in and outside of the program. In larger organizations the role serves as a unit or service manager; while in smaller organizations supervision may include all primary care, or all psychiatrists in the facility or region, or a combination of both. Mid-level providers may be a significant part of the medical staff. Employees supervise a small staff of physicians that may include specialties such as: primary care, psychiatry, geriatrics, and forensics. Employees may be responsible for programmatic leadership outside of Physician services such as other Allied Health, Psychology, Education, Pharmacy and/or Nursing. Settings include state psychiatric hospitals, ADATC (Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Centers), neuromedical treatment centers, developmental disability centers, specialty children's psychiatric facilities, state correctional facilities, state public health laboratories. While work is performed with independent professional responsibility, employees are generally accountable to a non-medical or physician director of the program. Employees at this level are typically expected to perform direct care and clinical duties for a significant portion of their work. Under the direction of a higher level medical director or facility or program director or assistant director this position is responsible for the planning, organizing and supervision of clinical care and clinical staff functions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices of general, preventive, and applicable specialty medicine and of the techniques involved.
  • Considerable knowledge of biological, social and psychological development process of patients served; and demonstrated leadership, teaching and management skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of developments in the field of medicine.
  • Considerable knowledge of state, organizational, and medical rules and regulations.
  • Skill in the treating and diagnosing of a variety of diseases and injuries and in the practice of applicable specialty of medicine.
  • Ability to plan, assign, organize, and supervise comprehensive medical services.
  • Ability to supervise and coordinate the work of assigned personnel.
  • Ability to lead interdisciplinary teams in developing and managing patient quality care practices.

Minimum Education and Experience

Licensed to practice medicine in the state of North Carolina and one year of experience.
