Class Concept

Positions in this class are characterized by serving as a team lead of one or more crews in standard transportation maintenance work in one of five areas (i.e., roadway maintenance, traffic services, bridge maintenance, roadside environmental or geotechnical). Work in this class primarily involves the operation of specialized hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and heavy equipment utilized in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of roads and roadside features for the State's highway and roadway systems. Other duties include inspecting, ensuring work zone safety, participating in snow & ice removal and training lower-level workers. Training may also involve safety training and CDL training and assessment. Positions in this class and level will specialize in a particular area of transportation and duties may include the oversight of minor to moderately complex roadway maintenance and retrofitting repair projects, oversight of contractor crews on projects, and/or oversight of inmate crews; equipment utilized includes all lower level equipment as well as asphalt paving machine, fine grade motor-grader, rubber tire excavator, and track excavator; oversight of rest area maintenance projects in their entirety, pesticide and chemical training, and operation of truck-mounted chemical sprayers to include determining proper mixing ratio and rate/spray pattern to ensure thorough application for a given scenario; assembling and placing concrete forms, general welding and carpentry tasks of moderate to high complexity, confined space entry, and training for safety, trenching and shoring, all of which may involve the utilization of tools and equipment to include welders, hand tools, and the most complex equipment such as cranes, rubber tire excavators, track excavators and tug boats, if needed.

  • Thorough knowledge of and skill in the safe operation of required equipment.
  • Ability to follow precise directions.
  • Ability to anticipate and avoid safety hazards for self, co-workers and traveling public.
  • Ability to lead crews as needed.
  • Ability to train lower-level workers on the safe operation of equipment necessary for respective area.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
