Class Concept

This is technical and supervisory work in directing the field operations of the Structural Pest Control Program to ensure compliance to the state and federal laws, rules, and regulations that govern the structural pest control industry. Employees coordinate and supervise a staff of field structural pest inspectors involved in the inspection and regulation of the structural pest industry.

Employees provide leadership for comprehensive investigative processes, develop and recommend a course of action on violations, and enter settlement negotiation conferences with Departmental attorney and the accused. Employees draft proposed legislation, rules and regulations and develop training materials, new or revised inspection procedures and other related administrative materials. Work may include other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of structural pest control practices and procedures, equipment, concepts of pest management problems, pesticides, pesticide toxicity, safety and disposal.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, explain and apply laws, rules and regulations administered and enforced by the Division.
  • Ability to plan, develop and administer an effective inspectional program
  • Ability to plan, direct, train and supervise, and evaluate the work of employees.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Ability to maintain effective work relationships with state, and federal agencies, the regulated industries and consumers.
  • Ability to utilize appropriate business software applications required within the Division.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in pest management, entomology, horticulture or a related life science curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in the state's structural pest control program or the structural pest control industry; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
