Class Concept

Positions in this class serve as a district supervisor or as a specialty unit supervisor. Positions serving as district supervisors oversee field investigations performed within their assigned district. Positions coordinate all field investigations through subordinate personnel, maintain close relationships with other law enforcement agencies and manage the administrative affairs within the District Office. Work may include active participation in the more complex or unusual investigations. When requests for investigative assistance are received from other law enforcement agencies, this employee is responsible for developing the work plan, and assigning staff to specific assignments.

Positions serving as specialty unit supervisors are responsible for supervising and overseeing specialty investigative units within the SBI. Positions supervise field investigations through directly assigned staff and campaigns which may also involve district personnel. Positions coordinate with local, state, and federal law enforcement officials on large scale investigations with specific areas of assignment within the investigation; and may also provide more broad support for the investigation depending upon the level of support required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of one or more specific areas of criminal investigation(s)
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, and practices used in the investigation of criminal offenses, and of the criminal laws of North Carolina and SBI organization and operation and of the organization, function, and responsibilities of other law enforcement agencies and the principles of securing and identifying a variety of crime related evidence
  • Skill using firearms and tools and equipment involved in evidence
  • Skill in supervising, coaching, mentoring, hiring, and disciplining employees
  • Ability to oversee budget expenditures and future budgetary needs, and oversee and manage purchasing requests
  • Skill in analyzing a variety of work assignments and direct district office agents of proper methods and procedures to use in investigations and to direct the investigation of a variety of criminal cases
  • Ability to establish and maintain favorable working relationships with other law enforcement agencies and officers

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of law enforcement experience that included having the power to arrest; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Applicant must have graduated from the SBI Academy or the next available SBI Academy after hiring and meet any other applicable North Carolina state statutory standards for law enforcement officers.
