Class Concept

This is professional entomology and limited supervisory work in the research of mosquito control and the control, eradication and prevention of the spread of arthropods and rodents injurious to public health in the coastal region of the State. Under the limited supervision of the program section chief, the employee in this class is responsible for planning, coordinating and conducting the coastal region's mosquito control research; providing expert technical assistance, consultation and training on pest control, eradication methods and pest transmitted diseases to local governments, health departments, other state/federal agencies and the general public; and reviewing and commenting on environmental permits which may result in potential mosquito breeding sites. Work includes independently planning, developing and designing ongoing research studies designed to control mosquitos through the implementation of new methodologies, techniques, and equipment processes in fragile saltwater marsh environments and waterways. Technical assistance and consultation includes serving as an expert resource on referrals regarding pests and vector problems thought to be of public health concern. The employee independently evaluates general public questions or health department referrals and formulates recommendations for controlling or eradicating pest and vector problems by determining the extent of the investigation required. Work includes planning and conducting formal and informal training sessions on insect and rodent control and the proper use of pesticides and application equipment. The employee technically supervises engineering staff when involved in the collection of mosquito research data; however, primarily administrative supervision is exhibited in the way of work planning and performance evaluation. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of research methodologies, techniques and principles
• Considerable knowledge of medical entomology.
• Considerable knowledge of environmental rules and regulations as applied to wetlands and other coastal systems.
• Ability to supervise and coordinate the work of subordinate personnel.
• Ability to identify uncommon pests and diseases and to formulate adequate measure for their control. Ability to effectively prepare, present, and communicate scientific and technical information to a variety of audiences.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with cooperating state/federal agencies and the general public.
• Ability to obtain and maintain license as a public health pesticide applicator.

Minimum Education and Experience

Master's degree in entomology from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in a health related area; or

Bachelor's degree in entomology from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of experience in the identification and control of insects, pests and diseases injurious to human health; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
