Public Health Educator II

Class Concept

This is consultative and administrative work in directing a program of health education for a large geographical area of the state or in supervising the educational aspects of a large specific health education program. Employees may serve as directors of local health department education programs in the largest metropolitan areas; Health Education Specialist in such programs as Family Planning, Alcoholism and Mental Health; or State regional consultants. Employees supervise lower level health educators and other public health employees at the state and local levels in planning and implementing general or specialized assignments in Public Health Education to state and local health department heads, community organizations, and individuals. Work is performed under administrative supervision and is evaluated through conferences and written reports.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of community assessment techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of public health and public health education.
  • Considerable knowledge of modern education theories and technique, methods and techniques of disseminating health educational information and modern health education theories and techniques.
  • Experience in applying the principles and practices of community health education at the local level.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate public health education programs.
  • Ability to build broad-based, and sustainable partnerships and coalitions.
  • Ability to conduct all phases of a comprehensive and collaborative community health assessment; experience in planning, implementing, and evaluating environmental health education programs.
  • Ability to coordinate the production and distribution of audience–specific materials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with audiences having wide ranges of educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to effectively use computers and software such as word-processing, publishing and presentation software.

Minimum Education and Experience

Master's degree in Public Health Education or in Public Health with a major in public health education from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in public health education; or Bachelor's degree with a major in health education from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in public health education; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
