Class Concept

Positions in this class are responsible for direct services including supervision, training, and supportive counseling to clients of diverse backgrounds having one or more disabilities in a residential school (or training facility) setting. Based on the setting, the client population is predominantly children and youths, but a small number of residential training programs serve adults. Positions in this class ensure a safe and secure environment and monitor and supervise students. Positions also enhance learning opportunities and assist or train students in a variety of age-appropriate activities that include personal hygiene and grooming, homework, and projects, and social and/or recreational activities. Positions may tutor students in academic subjects and skill development, conduct formal and informal learning exercises, and provide supportive counseling on interpersonal relationships and appropriate behaviors. Positions may develop teaching objectives related to the residential program and evaluate student progress emulating the parenting role in settings that serve children.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Children & Youth

  • (i) Intermediate knowledge of the principles and practices of guiding, training, and caring for children, youth, and/or adults with one or more disabilities
  • (ii) Ability to understand the personal and social problems of children, youth, and/or adults with disabilities
  • (iii) Ability to exercise judgment in assessing, observing, and recording progress, participation, and/or demonstrated skills and abilities of clients.

Adults

  • (i) Intermediate knowledge of the principles and practices of guiding, training, and encouraging adults with one or more disabilities
  • (ii) Ability to encourage and foster skill development to assist with achieving successful independent living and vocational outcomes
  • (iii) Ability to understand the personal and social problems of adults with disabilities
  • (iv) Ability to exercise judgment in assessing, observing, and recording progress, participation, and/or demonstrated skills and abilities of clients.

Minimum Education and Experience

Children & Youth: High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in an age- appropriate childcare setting or a goal-oriented setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Adult: High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in residential or goal-oriented program for adults; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
