Class Concept

Work in this class involves providing intensive social work services in serious and complicated cases which require the flexible use of a wide range of social work skills and intervention techniques. Services are provided in a variety of settings, including neuro-medical centers, child care facilities, Head Start/Early Head Start programs, home environments, correctional facilities, juvenile justice facilities, and state institutions. Clients/patients have specialized dementia, mental health, substance abuse and/or developmental disability issues. Work may involve providing in-depth assessment of individuals and family dynamics and needs, assessment, intervention and treatment of patients/clients and or families. Work may involve training and modeling to direct care staff or families. Employees work with patients/clients and families to develop treatment plans and discharge plans into the community. The discharge planning involves coordinating with a variety of community based service providers.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of a wide range of behavioral, and/or psychosocial problems and their treatment theory.
  • Considerable knowledge of family and group dynamics and a range of intervention techniques, governmental and private organizations, and resources in the community.
  • Thorough knowledge of social work principles, techniques, and practices, and their application to complex casework and group work.
  • Skill in establishing rapport with the client and/or family and in applying techniques or assessing psychosocial aspects of clients' problems.

Minimum Education and Experience

Master's degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution; or Bachelor's degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of directly related experience; or Master's degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of directly related experience; or Bachelor's degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
