Vocational Evaluation Specialist

Class Concept

Work in this class involves providing technical assistance, consultation and training to vocational evaluators within an assigned region. Position serves as a consultant to managers on vocational evaluation issues, trends and technology and on unusual or complicated client cases. Employees provide training and direction to new evaluators, assess the quality and quantity of their work; evaluate appropriate selection and utilization of tools, and the need for additional training. Employees assess effectiveness of the vocational evaluation program within the region through analysis of monthly statistical reports and case review and provide input into vocational evaluation policies, methods, standards and tools utilized. Employees typically report to the Rehabilitation Regional Director and may serve on the regional management team. Employees receive programmatic guidance from a program consultant. Some positions may supervise regionally-based vocational evaluators.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the vocational requirements of a variety of occupations.
  • Thorough knowledge of the psychological, social and special education concepts related to determination of vocational abilities and potential of individuals with one or more disabilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of evaluative tools, work samples, and job sampling techniques specific to the vocational evaluation of clients with disabilities.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate the work of a vocational team in a comprehensive vocational evaluation program.
  • Ability to analyze existing evaluative techniques and to develop and standardize new methods.
  • Ability to train employees in the fundamentals of vocational evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience

Master's degree in vocational evaluation, rehabilitation counseling, or closely related human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the vocational evaluation of individuals with disabilities; or Bachelor's degree in vocational evaluation, rehabilitation counseling, or closely related human services from an appropriately accredited institution and current certification by a nationally recognized certifying body and three years of progressive experience as a vocational evaluator; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
