Class Concept

Positions in this class serve as law enforcement officers investigating potential criminal violations of the Workers' Compensation Act. Positions conduct criminal investigations into cases of suspected workers' compensation fraud involving employees, employers, insurers, health care providers, attorneys, and vocational rehabilitation providers. The primary investigative focus is directed at the detection, apprehension and support of criminal prosecutions of persons, companies or other entities identified during the investigation. Works with Judicial Official and law enforcement agencies throughout the State to resolve these investigations.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of legal precedence and techniques of conducting criminal investigations in the detection, apprehension and support of prosecution of individuals and corporate entities committing workers' compensation crimes.
  • Working knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the insurance industry.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Industrial Commission's administrative rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Extensive knowledge of workers' compensation investigations, practices of insurance carriers, self-insurers, and health care providers.
  • Ability to examine all types of insurance and business records, extract important factual data therefrom, relate the data to other evidence developed, and present the findings in such a form as to clearly reveal, in an orderly manner, the scheme or device employed in an insurance related crime.
  • Ability to clearly articulate the identified violations in an investigative report, which is used by the prosecutor in support of the prosecution of individuals identified from the investigation.
  • Ability to perform and coordinate complex investigations of financial crimes and violations of the Workers' Compensation Act and related laws.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree from an appropriately credited institution and two years of progressive law enforcement including investigative and case preparation experience in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Necessary Special Requirements

Must meet certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the NC Criminal Justice and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment, including any annual training requirement.
