Class Concept

This is technical work performed in the State of North Carolina Crime Lab. The work consists of receiving evidence from law enforcement agencies, via mail and in-person, from local law enforcement officers distributing the evidence to the assigned forensic analyst; and upon completion of the examination by the analyst, returning the evidence to the submitting department. Employees are responsible for the timely flow and tracking of each case ensuring integrity and accountability of each piece of evidence. Employee is responsible for barcoding and proper Identification of items of evidence for court purposes, remediation of improperly packaged evidence, properly storing placement of evidence, and properly documenting chain of custody including electronic transfers, assisting law enforcement officers with evidence submissions, and presenting professional testimony to chain of custody in court proceedings

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of evidence handling rules and/or experience in forensic laboratory environment.
• Knowledge of chain of custody rules.
• Ability to establish and maintain favorable working relationships with other law enforcement agencies and officers.
• Ability in organizing work and time to maintain production during periods of work overload.
• Ability to perform some medium to heavy physical work.
• Ability to organize daily schedule with little or no supervision.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience in law enforcement support activities which includes evidence and handling protocols, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
