Class Concept

Employees provide and promotes efficient Fire Prevention programs at a major airport facility. Work involves performance of tasks designed to protect life, aircrafts, buildings, and systems during emergencies and/or natural disasters. The firefighter on duty keeps the station crew aware of what is happening by announcing aircraft movements, and looks for signs of aircrafts being in trouble, alerts the fire crew should an incident occur, ensuring that actions requested by Air Traffic Control are carried out by the required crewmembers and also for informing them of anything else that may seem pertinent. Employees Respond to fire alarms and other calls for assistance, such as automobile, aircraft and industrial accidents. Administers first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation to injured persons. Reports conditions to superiors to receive instructions using two-way radios. Drives and operates fire and crash rescue vehicles. Performs hose, vehicle relay, ladder, and pump operations. Evacuates personnel from structures. Shuts down aircraft/aerospace engines, systems and safety egress systems. Selects and attaches hose nozzles, depending on fire type, and directs streams of water or chemicals onto fires. Creates openings in buildings or aircraft for ventilation or entrance, using axes, chisels, crowbars, electric saws, or core cutters. Inspects fire sites after flames have been extinguished to ensure that there is no further danger. Lays hose lines and connect them to water supplies. Protects property from water and smoke using waterproof salvage covers, smoke ejectors, and deodorants. Uses carbon dioxide fire extinguishers; dry chemical fire extinguishers and multipurpose fire extinguishers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Thorough knowledge of firefighting equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
• Thorough knowledge of Automatic Fire Detection and Suppression Systems, firefighting equipment, chemicals, and techniques used in fighting fires.
• Thorough knowledge of fire occupational hazards, safety precautions, administering Emergency Medical Care to Trauma Victims and Mass Casualties, including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
• Skill in firefighting, rescue and emergency medical operations.
• Ability to learn and apply Air Force, Department of Defense (DOD), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Air National Guard, and State regulations.
• Ability to learn and apply airport design, aircraft rescue methods, aircraft and building materials, and construction requirements for Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC); electrical and life safety codes and their practices.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with others.
• Ability to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions in emergencies.
• Ability to wear all heavy fire resistant clothing and breathing apparatus and to operate equipment for prolonged periods.
• Ability to suppress, control, extinguish, salvage and overhaul fires.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of firefighter experience with a military or organized civilian fire department; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Basic Level ARFF (Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting) Certification as issued by the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE).
