This is supervisory work in directing highway patrol activities in an assigned district. Positions supervise a district Highway Patrol station with responsibilities for planning, assigning, and reviewing the work of subordinate Patrol Sergeants and Troopers engaged in the enforcement of traffic laws and reducing crime on public streets and highways in North Carolina. Positions are expected to apply Patrol policies in carrying out recurring patrol functions in accordance with general orders issued by a Troop Commander. Work includes inspecting and evaluating work performed by subordinate officers. Work is performed independently and is reviewed by inspection and through oral and written reports to superiors.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of Highway Patrol methods and procedures.
Thorough knowledge of first-aid principles and techniques.
Skill in the use of firearms and the use of crowd control techniques, procedures, and equipment.
Ability to plan, organize, direct, and review the work of subordinate personnel.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships between Patrol employees, other law enforcement agencies, and the general public.
Ability to interpret and apply pertinent provisions of motor vehicle law and the criminal code.
Ability to gather, organize, interpret, and present information orally or in writing.
Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
Ability to maintain routine records and to prepare reports from these records.
Physical strength sufficient to withstand long hours of continuous duty.
Minimum Education and Experience
High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma, preferably supplemented by formal training in modern police methods, and 10 years' sworn Highway Patrol experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training and Standards Commission.
