This is supervisory work assisting in directing Highway Patrol activities in an assigned area of the state. Employees serve as Troop Executive Officers with responsibilities for assisting a Troop Commander in planning, organizing, and directing the activities of Highway Patrol personnel in one of the troop areas. Work requires the exercise of considerable judgment and discretion and the use of considerable knowledge acquired from previous Highway Patrol experience. Work is performed under the general supervision of and is evaluated by a Troop Commander through a review of written and oral reports and frequent conferences.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of Highway Patrol methods and procedures.
Thorough knowledge of first aid-principles and practices.
Skill in the use of firearms and the use of crowd control techniques, procedures, and equipment.
Ability to plan, organize, direct, and review the work of subordinate personnel.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships between patrol employees, other law enforcement agencies, and the general public through contact and cooperation with these groups.
Ability to interpret and apply pertinent provisions of motor vehicle laws and the criminal code.
Ability to gather, organize, interpret, and present information orally or in writing.
Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
Ability to maintain routine clerical records and to prepare reports from these records.
Physical strength sufficient to withstand long hours of continuous duty.
Minimum Education and Experience
High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma, preferably supplemented by formal training in modern police methods, and 12 years' sworn Highway Patrol experience including 4 years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training and Standards Commission.
