This is supervisory work assisting in the directing of highway patrol activities within an assigned district. Employees supervise a highway patrol station with responsibilities for the discipline and conduct of an assigned squad engaged in the enforcement of traffic laws and reducing crime on public streets and highways in North Carolina. Employees receive and convey orders, trains new Troopers in the field, and inspects equipment and personal appearance of squad. Employees assists with planning and evaluating accident prevention programs and may conduct special investigations when delegated. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed by inspections and through oral and written reports to superiors.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of Highway Patrol methods and procedures.
Thorough knowledge of first-aid principles and techniques.
Skill in the use of firearms and in the use of crowd control techniques, procedures, and equipment.
Ability to interpret and apply motor vehicle laws as well as oral and written instructions.
Ability to instruct subordinates in departmental rules and regulations.
Ability to gather and organize material and to present such information orally or in writing.
Ability to prepare routine reports of activities engaged in and accidents investigated.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public.
Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations
Physical strength sufficient to withstand long hours of continuous duty.
Minimum Education and Experience
High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma, preferably supplemented by formal training in modern police methods, and 8 years' experience as a Highway Patrolman; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training and Standards Commission.
