Clinical Pharmacy Specialist

Class Concept

Employees in this class perform advanced clinical pharmacy. Employees are responsible for providing clinical services to patients and act as clinical coordinator in assignments to pharmacist. Services provided include clinical screening and preparing physician's medication orders, medication monitoring, recording data on patient/client profiles, dispensing drugs (which also includes pharmacy automation), chemicals and other pharmaceutical products, and maintaining inventory. This also includes providing drug information and consultation to clinical staff, supervising clinical services provided by pharmacists, supervise group education sessions provided by pharmacists, precepting psychiatric residents and act as coordinator with pharmacist precepting duties and teaching to the psychiatric residents. Work may include training, writing, interpreting or implementing policies and procedures. Work may include providing consultation to clinicians, providing instruction to patients, and participating in drug utilization reviews and pharmacy related research. Employees must also be proficient in obtaining patient health information. Some positions may be required to supervise a work unit. Work is performed under the supervision of a Pharmacy Director.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the practice of clinical pharmacy including, but not limited to: pharmacokinetics, pharmacotherapeutics, pharmacology, pathophysiology, nutritional assessment, pharmacodynamics, psychopathology, research techniques and methodologies.
  • Ability to detect and resolve adverse drug reactions and ability to assess pharmaceutical needs of patients/clients with complex, acute and chronic medical problems.
  • Ability to adept in the use of Electronic Health Record and ability to ensure compliance with federal and state laws and regulations, the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy policies and procedures, and customer service standards.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Ability to maintain quality working relationships with medical staff, patients, and other professionals.
  • Ability to walk through out the hospital and ability to stand on feet for long periods of time. Ability to instruct pharmacy, medical, nursing students and hospital staff.
  • Ability to implement new clinical services working independently.
  • Ability to integrate the constantly changing pharmaceutical and medical literature and practice standards in daily clinical practice.

Minimum Education and Experience

Licensed to practice pharmacy in the State of North Carolina and one year clinical pharmacy practice experience.
