Creative/Expressive Arts Supervisor

Class Concept

Work in this class involves the supervision, coordination, administration, and management of a creative/expressive arts program in a psychiatric hospital or intellectual disability center. Services are provided through a specialized therapeutic program or a variety of creative/expressive arts mediums which may include music, art, drama, or dance. Work includes planning, developing, coordinating, and administering all services provided by a professional staff. Responsibilities include representing the department in administrative program and management meetings to assist in determining policies, procedures, and work standards as applicable to the institution or department. Employees coordinate and consult with other disciplines, treatment teams, community groups and agencies concerning the development and implementation of creative/expressive arts services in a therapeutic or habilitative setting. Employees may organize, coordinate and supervise a comprehensive student training program in areas such as music therapy. Work also involves planning, coordinating, and directing in service education for staff in specific therapeutic principles, procedures and techniques as it relates to the particular medium. Work may include other related assignments as determined by appropriate management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the therapeutic creative/expressive arts principles, techniques, and methods and their application to the population being served.
  • Considerable knowledge of the etiology of various diseases, treatment procedures, and the implications for therapeutic intervention in the area of specialty.
  • Considerable knowledge of current trends and professional practices in the specialized area.
  • Ability to design and implement rehabilitative specific treatment programs for the clients served.
  • Ability to evaluate programs and services as well as individual progress.
  • Ability to develop and manage a program budget.
  • Ability to organize and supervise a group of employees.
  • Ability to interpret and convey basic principles, roles, and functions of a creative/expressive arts program in a habilitative or therapeutic setting to medical, allied health personnel, community organizations, and families.
  • Ability to plan, conduct, and coordinate in service training for staff and pre-professional training for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Ability to manage overall intra- and inter-departmental functioning within the institution.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in music therapy which includes a six month internship from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of professional experience in the specialty area; or Bachelor's degree in music or music education with an equivalency in music therapy which includes a six month internship from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of professional experience in all areas/phases of therapeutic programming; or Bachelor's degree in one of the creative/expressive arts areas (art, dance, drama, music) from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in the specialty area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Administering the class: if the creative/expressive arts degree program has a therapeutic option or emphasis, two years of the experience requirements will be waived.
