Work in this class involves coordinating and participating in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of dental health education and preventive dentistry programs for educational and community groups. Employees serve as field coordinators for lower level dental hygienists engaged in providing consultation in dental hygiene to various schools, civic and community organizations, nursing homes, local health departments, and community institutions. Work involves developing, implementing, and evaluating, dental health programs related to dental diseases, plaque control, nutrition, fluoridation and other areas of dental health. Work also includes providing consultation to various groups and individuals, preparing education materials, and training and supervising field hygienists. Work is performed under the supervision of a dentist and is reviewed through reports and oral conferences.
Recruitment Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of dental hygiene.
Working knowledge of modern educational theory and techniques in the field of public health education.
Working knowledge of journalistic principles and methods of preparing subject matter in the promotion of dental hygiene.
Working knowledge of display techniques and skill in the arrangement and operation of visual aids.
Ability to work effectively with people on all educational levels and to maintain effective working relationships with local health departments, community agencies, and the public.
Ability to write and speak effectively and to stimulate interest and cooperation among various groups in executing a program in dental health education.
Ability to coordinate the activities of lower level hygienists.
Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate training programs for field staff.
Minimum Education and Experience
Licensed to practice as a dental hygienist in the state of North Carolina and two years of experience in dental hygiene.
