Class Concept

Employees in this class are characterized by the performance of routine practical nursing work in the care and treatment of patients, under the supervision of a Professional Nurse or Nurse Supervisor. Employees in this class participate in nursing assessments, provide personal care of patients/inmates, take routine vital signs, feed patients, monitor intake and output, collect specimens, change aseptic dressings, deliver routine respiratory therapy and other treatments, catheter and colostomy care, stock supplies, admit patients, give routine medications and assist the Registered Nurse and Physician as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of nursing techniques, procedures, theory and practices.
  • Working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene, basic health and safety practices.
  • Working knowledge of proper dosage, effects & contraindications.
  • Skill in routine medical procedures (i.e. basic wound care including cleaning and bandaging injured areas, taking vital signs, such as blood pressure temperature, and weight, collect specimens, etc.).
  • Skill in preparing and administering medications.
  • Ability to guide and counsel subordinate staff on daily routines.
  • Ability to provide direct nursing care within scope of practice.
  • Ability to observe and evaluate patient's condition and ability to demonstrate a professional and caring approach..
  • Ability to instruct patients in routine medical care and ability to communicate effectively with patients and families orally and in written form..
  • Ability to respond to potentially life threatening situations in a calm and orderly manner.

Minimum Education and Experience

Licensed to practice as a Practical Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
