Class Concept

This is supervisory work in the administration and technical direction of a microbiology laboratory. Employee develops, establishes, revises and monitors unit work standards, methods, procedures and work flow to maintain the quality and quantity of testing and analyses conducted on drinking water, non-potable water and milk. Employee acts as an expert technical consultant and interface between laboratory and user clients and regulating agencies. Employee orders laboratory supplies, trains technicians, teaches classes and performs and reviews water and milk procedures and tests conducted in the laboratory. Work also involves assigning and coordinating work of subordinates, preparing special reports and studies and recommending major procedural changes to supervisor. Work is performed under general supervision with considerable independence in adjusting priorities, goals, assignments and techniques associated with laboratory tests and analyses.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Basic knowledge of the principles of supervision and training.
• Considerable knowledge of scientific methodology and the hazards involved in laboratory procedures along with related safety practices.
• Thorough knowledge of the basic principles, reference sources, and laboratory applications of biology and microbiology.
• Thorough knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations concerning water and milk quality.
• Ability to express technical information clearly, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to perform and record routine and complex laboratory tests and procedures.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
• Ability to perceive colors normally and to make olfactory distinctions.
• Ability to supervise, direct, plan, evaluate, organize and coordinate the activities and personnel in a microbiology laboratory.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in medical technology or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in a food and/or environmental microbiology laboratory; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Certification by the FDA as a certified milk analyst will be required of new employees.
