Class Concept

This class conceptualizes, administers and supervises program services provided in a multi-county or statewide area, including the development of an array of psychological services or directing a major comprehensive outpatient service in one of the largest mental health centers. Work involves planning the development of all major program services in the assigned geographic area; supervising directly all mental health, substance abuse, and intellectual disability program components; supervision administratively and technically of a staff which usually includes 70-100 employees, including legal technical supervising of 2030 psychologists; or planning, implementing, directing, and supervising inpatient, outpatient and residential treatment. May provide advanced psychological diagnosis and treatment through consultation and technical supervision of psychologists. Some employees provide supervision of specialty psychological evaluation and trainees. Employee may provide review of court orders, provide testimony as an expert witness and coordinate evaluation scheduling, perform specialty evaluations and compose specialty reports.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of behavior dynamics and the psychological principles applying to intelligence, aptitude, and personality assessment.
  • Thorough knowledge of projective and objective psychological tests including those of a complex, comprehensive nature.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of supportive and interpretive therapy and behavior modification.
  • Thorough knowledge of the specialty areas of psychology needed to serve the agency's clients.
  • Skill in administration and interpretation of tests; in directing the course of complex behavioral, supportive, and insight therapies.
  • Skill in administratively and professionally planning, directing, and coordinating an intensive and diversified program of psychological services, which includes a sizable staff of psychologists and assistants.

Minimum Education and Experience

Eligibility for licensure in North Carolina under the provisions of the NC Psychology Practice Act (G.S. 90270) and three years of post-doctoral psychological experience, one of which must have been in supervising/administering a psychological services program which included advanced clinical treatment, consultation, training, and research.
