Class Concept

This is advanced professional work involving the identification of high-priority HIV or sexually transmitted disease case suspects, contacts, and associates through field investigation to ensure rapid examination and treatment of those at risk. Employees perform duties as described in the Public Health Disease Control Specialist I with the additional responsibility for working with special groups such as migrant programs, prison systems, and/or military installations. This responsibility involves coordination and liaison with military, federal, or other state officials in the continuation of cooperative agreements in the location and treatment of military personnel, prison inmates or migrant workers. Employees also serve as a lead worker by handling the more difficult cases and providing guidance and consultation to lower level staff in casework activities, accompanying lower level staff during training period, providing training to community medical professionals and health department staff in the more technical or sensitive aspects of sexually transmitted disease or AIDS procedures, treatment techniques, etc. Employees may have region-wide responsibility and report to a regional supervisor.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases or AIDS, their symptoms, complications, and epidemiology.
  • Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of specific methods and techniques of interviewing, counseling, and analyzing data.
  • Ability to establish rapport and effective communications with clients, family members, and others involved.
  • Ability to interpret and apply federal, state, and local public health laws, rules, and regulations which are applicable to sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely in oral or written form.
  • Ability to plan and execute work.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience as a Public Health Disease Intervention Specialist, including one year in the same program area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
