Class Concept

Positions in this class produce x-ray films for physicians' use in diagnosing patients' medical issues. Responsibilities include preparing patients for radiological examinations by explaining procedures; instructing patients on the removal of obstructive articles such as jewelry, through which x-rays cannot pass; and positioning patients so that appropriate parts of the body can be radiographed. Positions in this class also prevent unnecessary exposure to radiation by utilizing lead shielding as appropriate for each exam, by limiting the size of the x-ray beam and by positioning the beam at the correct angle and height over the appropriate area of the body. In addition, positions are responsible for measuring the thickness of the section to be radiographed and appropriately determining settings to produce radiographs of the appropriate density, detail, and contrast. Positions will make the exposure and process the film, allowing accurate timing for each task. Positions may also administer fluoroscopic liquids to clients and conduct imaging procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of anatomy, principals of imaging, positioning of patients, and medical ethics.
• Knowledge of the principals of operating imaging machines and preventive maintenance.
• Knowledge of safety procedures used for preventing or reducing radiation hazards.
• Ability to work with a variety of customers including customers across all age groups, the disabled, vendors, and internal customers.
• Ability to complete and to maintain a variety of records and reports.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and completion of an accredited Radiologic Technology program, AART Registered or eligible for registration; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
